Japan Travelling guide Japanese meals

t f B! P L
Literally... extraordinary excitements and fun are here in Osaka... だぞっ!!.

.

.

How are you going guys today!!.

For this title... I would like to introduce Osaka city, the second biggest city in Japan where we are living right now today.

Even have said so... I think some of you might have not known about the name of Osaka city.

But evidently that Osaka city is a great city where has won in the 5th ranking by the reader's choice rankings in "The best big cities in the world in 2019", by the one of a famous American Travel magazine called "Conde Nast Traveller".

Apparently... Osaka is described as one of a city where it has enormous excitements and fun from the impressions of foreign travellers.

Certainly... Osaka is much crowded and very noisy like in Delhi or HongKong, since their particular kansai intonations are similar to what Chinese people's pronunciations.

But in other hand... Osaka is literally a part of Japan, same typical gentle, warm atmospheres of Japanese habits are still existing in it.

Hence... do not simply comprehend that Osaka is same as these other Asian abroad cities.

What I can simply stated about Osaka in the sentence is that which it might gives you an impression of full of energy by the clamorous people and the noisiness covering the entire city.

Honestly... probably sometimes... this volume of loudness from Osaka people may bothers you a lot more than other major Japanese cities.

But for some of the people... I am sure that those who feel those Osaka's daily disordering circumstances may gives much excitements by turning that negative points into good impressions.

Ahaha... these information might raise your interests in Osaka.

If so... let's move on it furthermore.

Quite often... extraordinary can be seen in the local meals.

In the above video... the creator of above video, Cakes and faces are visiting "Douton-bori" the major famous town near by "Namba Station" in mid Osaka city.

I think a lot of our blog readers have heard a town name called "Namba" before.

Yes... Namba is the town where "NMB48" the a major sister AKB48 group in Osaka is actually performing in their own theatre everyday.

.

However... this is an article to explain about Osaka city.

If you want to watch their songs... click the below linkages for more.

Anyway... They have described so many typical traditional Osaka dishes like "Okonomi-yaki", "Tako-yaki" and "Kushi-katsu".

【Okonomi-Yaki.】.
*Mainly for eat in or take away.
*Serves per a plate.
*Cost you around JP 600~1,500 Yen per a plate.

.

Okonomi-yaki (おこのみやき:お好み焼き) stands in two words.

Okonomi means "your favouring or your liking stuff".

Yaki means grilled , baked or roasted.

So... Okonomi-yaki describes... a grilled or baked dish which your favourite stuff has in it.

Hence... some of you might thought that you can use a word "Okonomi" when you intend expressing your liking emotions for somebody else.

But beware... that a letter in Okonomi's "O" is an attachment letter for expressing in a polite situations.

So if you intend to use that word, it is better to say "You are my Konomi" instead of "Okonomi" is much suited in nowadays Japanese expressions.

Even have said so... when you have spoken this phrase "You are my Konomi", even can give an impression that you are very polite but it also gives others a bit old fashioned though.

Hence if you are not focusing to behave acting like Samurai politeness... do recommend to use "I like you" (Watashi wa anata ga suki desu) like the above NMB48 song "Boku datte naichau yo".

Anyway... back to an Okonomi-yaki... Okonomi-yaki is like an unsweet salty pancake.

Firstly... prepare sliced cabbage and sliced long Japanese onions, sea foods like squids and prawns then put them into a soup bowl which has mixed with scrambled eggs, flour and water.

Pour the mixture on to a hot plate, set 1 mm sliced pork on to Okonomi-yaki then bake both sides well.

Spread Japanese arranged Worcestershire sauce (Okonomi-yaki sauce) and mayonnaise sauce on top...then finally... sprinkle the flakes of seaweeds and processed thin sliced dried Bonito fish on before serving.

Usually... Okonomiyaki is based on salt and fish stock taste and it mainly eats in a tea time instead of tea and cake.

Therefore... Okonomi-yaki is a typical Japanese junk food and one of the Japanese dish which you must try it if you are not a vegetarian.

【Tako-Yaki.】.
*Mainly for take away.
*Serves by a plate, contains around 6~8 balls.
*Cost you around JP 400~700 Yen per a plate.

.

Takoyaki is also a typical unique Osaka local soul food.

Tako means Octopus... yes... we quite often eat a nasty horrible looking but a bit tiny Kraken which can be seen in the popular movie called "The pirates of Caribbeans" here in Japan.

Octopus has a very scary style.

So... do not recall your memories of how they looked but concentrate on just eating it also as the most of Japanese do.

Ahaha... honestly... even the most of Japanese people do afraid of seeing their actual scary looking too.

But since the octopus is very tasty like a bit chewy chicken meat, Tako-yaki is very common in entire Japan.

Tako-yaki is also Osaka's major soul food and in a style of funny, cute ball like dumpling shape.

It's soup mixture has in same as Okonomi-yaki like salty fish stock based taste.

The speciality of this Tako-yaki food is that it mainly contains a piece  of octopus meat and red ginger pickle frakes are in a ball.

Hence from the eyes of broad sense ... It is a part of Okonomi-yaki  cooking style and only the differ is the its shape and ingredients in it.

However... since Tako-yaki be able to take it away and eat outside, Japanese people have seemed to believe it is much more closer to a junk food than Okonomi-yaki.

Anyway... after set it in own unique shapes, as like Oknomi-yaki... Okonomi-yaki sauce and mayonnaise on the top, then sprinkle the flakes of seaweeds and processed thin sliced dried Bonito fish before serving.

The soup pouring out from Tako-yaki balls are so hot... so... watch out!!.

【Kushi-Katsu.】.
*Mainly for eat in a restaurant.
*Served by a stick.
*Cost you around JP 100~300 Yen per a stick.

.

Kushi means skewer... It is a pointed stick that is baked or fried with meat or fish on the skewer during cooking.

Katsu means deep fried pork meat which has came from the full word "Ton-Katsu".

This Katsu is from the English meal "a Pork Cutlet", (Ton-Katsu) which had introduced around 150 years ago by the Scottish to Japan.

This "Ton" (とん:豚) is a pronunciation for a letter describing a pig  (ぶた) in a Kanji character.

Therefore... You can easily imagine that "Pork Cutlet" turned into "Cuts" and finally to "Katsu" in Japanese.

Therefore... this "Katsu" is deeply connected with "a Pork cutlet" since the start.

Hence... when you have asked to a Japanese with the phrase "I want to eat Katsu"... they will definitely serving you a dish of deep fried pork cutlet.

So... if you want to have a beef... ask then with adding a word "Beef Katsu" then the most of Japanese people will realized to know that you want  beef instead of pork.

However... even has named "Katsu" but... as like vague Japanese always do... It does not meant to keep away other ingredients.

The name of Kushi-katsu is just came from the original fried cooking style which have started with only skewered cutted beef in the early 20 century in Osaka.

Hence currently... Kushi-katsu has changed to use all sorts of other ingredients like meat, chicken, fish, and even various vegetables also.

They serves various foodstuff but make sure that it provides in deep fried cooked.

Anyway... It is just similar to the famous Indonesian meal called "Satay".

Therefore... Kushi-Katsu is like that style for dishes that meat, fish or vegetables are held on the skewers and baked.

However, there are two types of skewered cooking methods in Japan, the most famous name is Yaki-Tori.

Tori means chicken... and it is not deep fried but grilled chicken meat.

However... as the name of Kushi-Katsu suggests that Kushi-Katsu represents the one of the famous Osaka soul food, a dish in which meat and vegetables are skewered and fried in oil.

So... it is like a tempura... but it is appropriate to say that it is much similar to Kara-age (Fried chicken) since the texture of coating is in Kara-Katsu way.

In Osaka, there are many varieties as the numbers of restaurants, some of the Kushi-Katsu restaurants even they serve the fried Kushi-Katsu Ice cream here in Osaka.

Ahaha... very strange but seems very exciting... right??.
