"KY person", Microaggression and Cross-cultural mismatch problems!!

How are you guys doing today!!

Today... let me talk about "Microaggressions" which quite often happen in Japan!!

Firstly,  explanation for the people who do not know about what "Micro aggression" is...

according to the Wikipedia says...

A microaggression is a term used for brief and commonplace daily verbal, behavioural, or environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative prejudicial slights and insults toward any marginalized group.   

Ahaha... very long definition as Rachel has said in the above movie, but...

I can state "Micro aggression" in simple 2 letters as describe as a "KY person" here in Japan!!




The letters "KY" are stand from the Japanese phrase of "Kuki ga Yomenai"...

"Kuki" means "air", so...

if it is used in the situation, it converts into the meaning of "surrounding air" then "atmosphere" that fely in a certain person or a group!!

"ga" is a connection word, so skip that... then...

"Yomenai" is constructed with 2 words... which are...

"Yome" is an evolutionary usage for below denial connection word of "Yomu" meaning "Read" and...

"~nai" means "Not able to" like, using to deny before verbal expression after the verb!!

So... "read, not able to do it"... simply makes a direct translation into English is something like this!!

So... put that example into your mind, explaining what "a KY person" means...

『an annoying person who can not read people's emotions or thoughts of others』!!

As Rachel & Sharla have been told in the movie about...

The particular happening found a particular Micro aggression in Japan is...

"Quite often Japanese give a fork instead of chopsticks to foreigners... and that is the typical case of a micro aggression"!!

Frankly... I have heard that above claims many times from foreigner's friends, but...

DO YOU THINK THAT CASE is "A MICRO AGGRESSION" also??

No way!!

Their action of handing over a fork instead of giving you chopsticks...

have very deep thoughts accumulated behind it!!




This case is as described as like...

"The most of foreigners are not capable with using chopsticks, so...

hand over a fork is much kinder for them".

and...

"Even if they can use chopsticks, a fork is much easier for them to eat...

so let's give them a fork...

if they want chopsticks instead...

they would express their demand asking for chopsticks too"!!

If that foreigner can use chopsticks...

he or she should has staying in Japan for a long time, so...

they should be the person who are fluent in Japanese, and...

be able to ask for chopsticks easily in Japanese... って事！！

This is an ordinary Japanese mindset!!

So, ordinary Japanese people are thinking about other people a lot...

even if they have in less experience!!

but quite often, many foreigners are found being bended...

not accurately catching our hearts in most of cases...

even in similar situations...

toward into a bad way with unjustifiable misconception!!

Well... get the difference between your culture and Japanese mindset??

Briefly explaining the differences between the above for you to understand them more..

Japanese are always estimate others' situation or experience and act to behave on the basis of other people's benefit!!

According to the cultural study textbook describes Japanese culture as like...

The culture that emphasize pride and dignity!!

I think it is definitely true and putting this topic into the above "Chopsticks case",

it could be explained as...

"If the foreigner were unable to use chopsticks...

it would make him or her should say, I can not use chopsticks, and...

that situation makes him or her may feel ashamed of"!!

Therefore...  as a result of considering, which one should pass him or her chopsticks and a fork...

that staff handed out a fork with a low possibility of not being insult by a foreign visitor! !

Finally... think it carefully from those facts I have mentioned to you...

『Do you think Micro aggression has been occured in the above case??』

My answer is NO...

The above case could not be put on disputing theme at from the first time!!

given a fork...

if so, only he or she has to say that You need chopsticks first in Japanese or in English!!

But did not expressing any requirement at that time...

Making a big claim on such a small biased issue with selfish mind...

I strongly need to say, who has the micro aggression the most??

Ahaha... sorry with my strong words...

but offensively making claims loudly based on their selfishness without recognizing others warm intentions...

I think that is the attitude that have to avoid the most by the civilised people!!

But unfortunately... some people are not able to stop these nonsense behaviour even...

of course... some of Japanese citizens too, though!!

not be able to pay attention to others feelings or thoughts are existing around us... って事なのです！！
